BASIL April 2024
The front cover of BASIL shows the path of the partial solar eclipse on 8 April 2024, which will be visible from western parts of the UK.
Observing highlights of the month include:
- 8 April: Small partial solar eclipse visible from western UK at sunset
- 11 April: Mars and Saturn in conjunction (am)
- 20 April: Jupiter and Uranus in conjunction (pm)
- 22 April: April Lyrid meteor shower peak (unfavourable)
- 29 April: Mars and Neptune in close conjunction (am)
Members' recent astrophotography images are shown on p18 (Andrew Grasemann - Gibbous Moon) and p22 (Chris Lee - Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks).
35 well placed observing targets for the month are listed on p24-25 and 14 targets for observing the Virgo Cluster of galaxies are given on p26-27.
The beautiful Sombrero Galaxy (Messier 104) is well placed for observing during the month (see p30).
For experienced observers, there is an asteroid occultation on 24 April (see p21) - info. provided by BAS member Nigel Wakefield.
