The BAS Society

The Bristol Astronomical Society (BAS) is run by amateur astronomers as a non-profitmaking charity. We are dedicated to exploring and explaining the splendours of the night sky and all aspects of astronomy for both our members and the public through regular outreach. With over 120 members we are one of the most active Societies in the UK.

We organise weekly talks and meetings throughout most of the year (see the programme page) given by a mixture of professional and amateur astronomers and local members.

Members can use our own observatory and it’s 18” and 12” telescopes. We can also provide loan telescopes to members and have a well-stocked library of books.

During the winter season we open our observatory for public viewing evening events (weather permitting) and participate in local daytime events using our portable Solar telescopes. We are active supporters of the UK’s National Astronomy Week and are regular participants the Bristol Festival of Nature held each June. Please visit our Observing page for a current list of planned events.

The Society is financed entirely from members’ subscriptions, with the occasional fund raising activity to boost funds for the purchase of books and equipment for use by members.

If you wish to join the BAS, or would like to make a donation to the Society please go to our membership page.

We welcome visitors to our meetings, especially astronomers from other Societies/Clubs and have had the occasional foreign astronomer visit us, from places such as Australia, South Africa and the USA. Local visitors are encouraged to join the Society after they have visited us a couple of times.

The society meets at Bristol Photographic Society, Station Road, Montpelier, Bristol.
