Solar Observing at Troopers Hill, 9th August 2025
A team of BAS members had a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon on 9th August conducting a public solar observing session at Troopers Hill in Bristol.
Many people had come to Troopers Hill to watch the planned balloon ascent and so it was a busy time for the team helping the public safely observe the Sun.
We had with us the following equipment: Lunt H-alpha telescope, PST Coronado H-alpha telescope, refractor telescope with glass solar filter (objective), See-Star S30 with solar filter, solar spectroscope and the ‘place the planets’ game.
It was a very successful session and the chair of the ‘Friends of Troopers Hill’ group said, “A huge thank you to all of you for your help in making yesterday really fun and interesting for a lot of people. Please could you pass on our thanks to BAS members who did a fantastic job – you can see how busy they were in the photos.”
A big thank-you to Allan McCarthy for organising the event and to all the BAS members who volunteered for the solar observing session: Richard Mansfield, Andy Smith, Richard Bennett, Ben Commis, Stephen Price and Mel Rigby.
