BASIL January 2021
Solar cycle progression data shows a spike in sunspot numbers over the last month - predicted numbers are given for the next 12 months, as solar activity is forecast to slowly increase.
Following the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in December, the two planets still remain relatively close in the night sky. The Great Conjunction was live streamed from the Failand Observatory and photos and images from members are included in January's BASIL.
Visible passes of the ISS and satellite X-37B are given for January.
28 astronomical events and 24 observing targets for the month are listed, with more details for Hind's Crimson Star, M42 (see image taken at the Failand Observatory), M37 and 145 Canis Majoris ('the Winter Alberio').
Asteroid Irma occultation of a 12.4 magnitude star in Aries will take place on 29th January - details and location data are given in January's BASIL.
