The front cover of BASIL shows the BAS Chair, Fiona Lambert, cutting the BAS 80th anniversary cake at our anniversary celebration on 8th December 2022.

Predicted solar activity, solar cycle progression, lunar phases and events, solar system finder charts and rise / set times are reported for January.

Also included is the monthly observing calendar, highlights of the January night sky, observable comets and asteroids, and the calendar of astronomical events for January.

The γ-Ursae Minorid Meteor Shower reaches its peak on 19 January 2023 - see page 19.

Constellation of the month is Auriga, which is well-placed for observing the constellation's stars and DSO (Deep Sky Objects), including the open clusters M36, M37 and M38.

Visible transits of the ISS for January are listed.

24 observing targets for the month are provided, with more details given for:

  • M45 (the Pleiades Open Cluster in Taurus)
  • Caldwell 41 (the Hyades Open Cluster in Taurus)
  • R Leporis - Hind's Crimson Star
  • 135 Canis Majoris - the Winter 'Albireo'
  • M42, the Orion Nebula, and the Trapezium Cluster in Orion
  • Open Cluster M37  in Auriga
