The front cover of July's BASIL shows an image of the Trifid Nebula (M20) taken recently by BAS member Chris Lee.

Monthly updates are given for the following:

  • Predicted solar activity, solar cycle progression, lunar phases and events, solar system finder charts and planetary rise/set times.
  • Observing calendar, highlights of the night sky, observable comets and asteroids, and the calendar of astronomical events for the month.
  • Visible transits of the ISS - 62 passes this month.

Constellation of the month is Scutum, which is well-placed for observing, including some interesting open clusters.

25 observing targets for the month are listed and more details are given for the following targets:

  • M11 and M26 - open clusters in Scutum.
  • NGC 6543, the Cats Eye nebula in Draco.
