The front cover of BASIL shows BAS members attending a lecture given on 5 Sep 2023 at Bristol University by J.M. van der Hulst, Professor in Radio Astronomy at the University of Groningen, on the subject of:  "Impact of the advances in radio astronomy on science and society". The lecture included an update on latest developments with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, which is also shown on the front cover.

BASIL's monthly updates include the following:

  • Predicted solar activity, solar cycle progression, lunar phases and events, solar system finder charts and planetary rise/set times.
  • Observing calendar, highlights of the night sky, observable comets and asteroids, and the calendar of astronomical events for the month.
  • Visible transits of the ISS.

Highlights of the month include:

  • The Orionid meteor shower on 22 October.
  • Small partial lunar eclipse on 28 October.

Constellations of the month are Cygnus and Lyra, which are well-placed for observing their stars and DSOs.

13 observing targets for the month are listed and more details are given for the following targets:

  • Open cluster M29 in Cygnus.
  • Globular cluster M15 in Pegasus.
  • Globular cluster M2 in Aquarius.
  • 'Herschel's Garnet Star' in Cygnus.
