MON (Members Observing Night) : Jupiter

Speaker: David Bennett Institution: BAS

A Members Observing Night (MON) is an observational night dedicated to studying a specific object that is currently visible.  It can also be a training night concentrating on a specific observational technique, instrument or software.

The choice is yours so please make a suggestion and let us know what you are interested in doing?

As a start, Jupiter is prominent in the Southern sky so if the dreaded weather permits and we think we may get some reasonable breaks in the cloud I am proposing we focus on Jupiter in both of our permanent telescopes. You may wish to bring your own scope as well.

There is a lot going on and quite a rare event with 2 shadows visible later in the evening.

Please come along and have a fun evening watching this live event.  Bring a camera if you wish and we will try to take a snap.  If you have a DSLR then a T mount for camera will be needed. I will open the gates at 7.00 PM BST and start watching as soon as we can. The action begins just after sun set and carries on to around 11.30. Bring warm drinks and warm clothing. Will get the kettle working.

To confirm you intend to come just leave a reply here or email me at observatory@bristolastrosoc.org.uk

I will have a look at the weather forecast and post here a GO NOGO note at 10.00 am on Monday.

  1. Hi David,
I’ve e.mailed you but I’ll also mention here that I’d be interested in coming along to the Jupiter MON, weather permitting. I’ll probably bring a scope as well if that’s OK.
    Regards,
    John

  2. NOGO for tonight’s MON. Heavy rain forecast.
Possible Jupiter satellite observations next week but they are late evening events. Will create MON’s (Members Observing Nights) and perhaps one may be possible.
