The front cover of BASIL shows the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope on 25 December 2021 (see page 27 for JWST information).
Solar activity continues to be slightly higher than predicted values for this stage of the solar cycle - see pages 4 to 5.
January is still a good month to observe the planet Jupiter (see page 12).
Constellation of the month is Auriga, with the constellation's star chart shown on page 17.
24 observing targets for January are listed, with further observing details for the following targets:
- R Leporis - Hind's Crimson Star
- 145 Canis Majoris (the winter 'Albireo)
- The Trapezium Cluster in M42 (Orion Nebula)
- Messier 37 - open cluster in Auriga
There is an asteroid (212 Medea) occultation of a 12.4 magnitude star in Taurus on 21 January (see p 26).
Society News includes an update from the December BAS Committee meeting and a BAS membership update, with a welcome for all new and returning members.
