BASIL May 2022

The front cover of BASIL shows solar images and sunspots taken recently by BAS member Chris Lee.

Solar cycle progression continues to show an upward trend in sunspot numbers over the year - predicted numbers are given for the next 12 months, as solar activity is forecast to slowly increase.

Constellation of the month is Canes Venatici, which is well placed for observing its stars and deep sky objects, including the Sunflower Galaxy, Messier 63.

There will be a total lunar eclipse on 16 May.

There will be 67 visible transits of the ISS during May.

21 observing targets for the month are listed, with more details given for Messier 63 (Sunflower Galaxy) in the constellation Canes Venatici.

BAS member David Bennett has written an article on 'Libration of the Moon', which compares lunar images obtained by David in 1974 and 2020.  The article explains the three main components of libration, characteristics and effect on lunar images.

Society News provides details of the 2022 programme of talks, including monthly 'hybrid' meetings at Unit 13 in Montpelier, a summary report on the BAS Committee meeting held on 27 April 2022, and information about the Society's 8-inch Orion Europa telescope which was won by BAS member Brynley Clark.
